WieKi Lab (Wiener Kinderstudien)

Mother and baby in contact during an EEG surgery

The WieKi Lab belongs to the Research Unit of Developmental Psychology and investigates early social and cognitive development of infants and children by integrating various methods such as physiological measures, behavior observations and eye tracking. The sessions are taking place in two test rooms located on the first floor (right stairs) of Liebiggasse 5. For further information on our research see www.kinderstudien.at.

Technical Equipment

fNIRS (functional near infrared spectroscopy)

Using fNIRS infrared light is emitted via optodes into the head and recorded by sensors. Depending on the oxygen content of the blood, different wavelengths of light are absorbed. As a result, a statement about the neural activation in different brain areas can be made.

EEG (elektroencephalogram)

EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain via electrodes placed on the scalp. Neuronal rhythms are recorded and graphically displayed in this way.

ECG (elektrocardiogram)

ECG measures the electrical activity of the heart.

Eye Tracking (detection of eye movements)

Eye tracking records eye movements and pupil sizes of subjects. This method enables the exploration of the direction of people’s visual attention.

Behavioural measures

For behavior observation, interactions between mother and child are videotaped and afterwards systematically coded and evaluated.
